3-phase welders

i talked to a guy selling a couple older 220v 3-phase mig welders (hobart and lincoln). 350-400 amp range. can they be converted to single phase? and what do you think they are worth? $500 sound high?

thanks all

Re: 3-phase welders

Any auction I've attended with three phase welders has had them going way cheap. THis tells me the average guy can't use them on single phase power. I'd say the price is high, yes. I just picked up a 220V single phase welder set up with a spool gun for aluminum for $300. The welding shop said the price I paid was about $200 less than they would have gotten for just the welder.
THree phase electric motors can be coverted fairly easily, but welders are a different animal.
If you need a definite answer for yout welder question, go to the Yesterday's tractors website(www.ytmag.com) and ask the same question on the TOOL board. THere are some real knowledgeable welding guys there.

Yes you can convert it to single phase with a converter, not cheap.
