Driveshaft slip joints, where do they go?

Oh man, I feel like a real newbie askin' this one....kinda embarrassed too.

My '86 CJ came sans driveshafts when I bought it 2 years ago. I got a rear driveshaft from my friend shortly after and put it in with the slip joint closer to the transfercase. Now I've finally reached the point where I'm ready for the front. I've searched my collection of pictures and can't see where the slip joint goes...closer to the front axle or the transfercase?

Next to the transfer case, so it's more protected from bashing.

Mine is up close to the transfer case, it came that way, but all the others i've seen are this way too.

Re: Driveshaft slip joints, where do they go?

SWB Jeeps have the slip yoke next to the case. FSJ applications (like what I have under my '28 are exactly opposite, the slip yoke is down by the axle yoke, and a flange-mount CV joint is on the 'case end...

Either way will work out fine, BTW. The driveshaft is not directional, it can transfer torque either direction equally well.

I figured it went closer to the transfercase, but I just wasn't sure, as I had seen pictures with the driveshafts installed either way.

Thanks guys.
