CJ5 not shutting off - Help

Lirpasues CJ5 is kept outside (ungaraged) and the temp has been in the mid teens to lower 20's the last few days. The other day I went out to start it and let it warm up before a short trip. I let it run 10 min. or so and then went out to turn it off as I wasn't going to leave immediately. I turned the key to the off position and the engine didn't turn off. I had to apply the maunal choke and kill it. A bit later I went to drive it and everything worked fine and has ever since until this evening. I went through the same process but this time instead of just starting and idling, the starter wouldn't disengage either. I finally got the motor choked down and killed it but the alt lite remained lit indicating to me that I still had a circuit made. I started the jeep back up and at this point it is still running and will not shut off with the key. Does this sound to anybody else like a bad ignition switch (being affected by the cold). Any suggestions are appreciated.

I believe you've narrowed down the problem. That would be my guess, and the first place I'd look for a resoulition.

If it's the "switch in column" variety, I've got 20:1 that the cheapo pot metal "rack" broke. It's not too bad to change out, and gives you a good opportunity to lube everything up while you're in there.

Well, got the new ignition switch today and installed it.....in the rain and snow. Works great now though it's not cold enough yet to give it the real test. Thanks LEVE for the validation of mmy assessment

Re: CJ5 not shutting off - Help

Just for the record, it did refuse to shut off at least once more since the new ignition switch was put in. But now that it's warmed up, we haven't had any problems.
