84 CJ-7 Engine Noise

I started looking through the BBS for some tips on replacing my lifers. But, the more I read, the less sure I was that lifters were my problem. The symptoms are a very noticable clickety-clack that sounds like it comes from the top of the engine (under the valve cover - towards the back of the engine), low oil pressure, and significant blow-by into the air intake, all when it warms up. The oil pressure is only 7 or 8 once it gets good and warmed up. I've had this Jeep for about seven years, and it has always had these problems, and they never seem to get any worse. Oil additives have little, if an affect.

A long time Jeep mechanic once told me not to worry about it, but I guess I am just too uptight. Any thoughts or advice?

Scott

1. The cam's wearing.
2. The lifters may be plugged or the faces worn.
3. The valve train is suffering.
4. The valve guides are wearing.
5. The vavle seats are possible hammering away on the seats.
6. The rings may be bad.
7. The valve cover/baffles may need cleaning.
8. A puke jar on the PVC wouldn't hurt to keep the oil from being burned in the cylinders and fouling the exhaust and Cat Converter.
9. Replace the BBD with a Weber or a MC2100.
10. Do the TR or GM HEI ignition upgrade.
11. Drive 'er into the ground.
12. Rebuil 'er.
13. Do it again.

Now that's my idea of fun!

Re: 84 CJ-7 Engine Noise

I replaced the cam, lifters, rockers, rocker pivots, brides,in my 83cj7 and it runns nice and quiet.I didn't have the valves or the head done, only 55k on the motor and it all checked out OK.
This was my first time working on any engine and had plenty of time on a weekend. I took my time and checked everything twice.Cleanning took most of the time but it
MUST be done .I do have lots of tools but I only used a hand full of basic ones with the exception of a torque wrench that I bought for $45.
I looked up the parts and they run just over $200.
I had a blast doing it and won't hesitate to do it again
