Keep the 231 or go dana 300?

I'm planning on swapping in a d44 front into my tj most likely out of a waggy and they come with either side drops. Adventually i was thinking about putting a sye on my 231 but that's a minium $300 for a good beefey one, then it hit me that dana 300's usually go for between $100-$150 for a good used one. Will any dana 300 bolt up to my auto or do i need to find a dana 300 that was originally attached to an auto? Did they have factory adapters? Anything else i need to take into consideration or will it just bolt up. My buddy put a 300 in his jeep and said he had to order some bearing from down east offroad. Any details about that? Anything i should consider that i'm not? I think 3.55's were common ratios in pass side drop axles and not even avilable in grand waggy d44's so that would save me the $$ that i would have had to spend for re-gearing for the t-case swap.

1. The D300 has the same bolt pattern as a NP231.
2. The input spline count is the same as the Dana 300
3. Throw on a DownEast Flip Kit if your axle needs require it.

IMHO.. the Dana 300 is a great transfer case... rebuild it with a Tera Low and it's gonna be better.

Re: Keep the 231 or go dana 300?

The 231 has two inputs, ether a 21 spline, or a 23 spline. I know that the 23 came with the 4.0 and the 5 speed, I am not sure what case the autos had. But if you are going to be looking for a D300 to try and fit, you may want to check on the input. I am sure that someone knows how many spline you have, and what the 300 has. If I had to chose from the two I would go with the D300 for sure. Twin stick is COOL !
