Need opinions on CJ body ideas (topless added)

I have several ideas as to what I want my CJ to be like when I finish. I am going to cut my frame and lengthen it by 20 inches, go to coils, etc...

The body though will need a fair amount of attention due to rust and stretching, so I figure that while I'm in there, why not get creative.

Here are my two ideas:

One is basically a CJ6, except that I would modify the inside wheel wells to accept a TJ rear seat.

The other will have the same wheel well modification as well as extending the door opening to the edge of the wheel well to aid entry/exit. My wife has agreed that making the new doors wouldn't be too hard (she can sew and has promised to teach me!).

Which do you guys prefer. Any input is welcome. This won't be happening for a while as I am at the frame cutting stage right now.

Thanks,
Fritz

Oh, and thanks to Jeepzilla who unwittingly gave me a near perfect side shot of a CJ5 with the F101 behind it. I prefer deep burgundy, but you gotta do with what you got!

Re: Need opinions on CJ body ideas

The four dour idea is neat, but being a bit of a retro-grouch, I am partial to the CJ6 look. I have a short fender 5 that is going to grow into a CJ6. I actually just want the length for an SM465 203/205 combo, but it is really convenient that at the CJ6 length, I can still buy non-custom soft tops. But, if your wife can sew canvas there is no reason to not have a custom top. Again, I like the CJ6 look. Just my two cents.

IMHO, I like the 4 doors, but would favor constructing the 2 door model. The reason: There's bound to be a lot of wind at highway speeds whipping in the tub if all four doors were off.... unless half doors were used on the back.

It's a nice concept. Keep us informed of the progress.

Both of those designs are really nice, but I like the CJ5/8 truck idea even better

I prefer the 2 door version. I don't have any technical reason, just my personal preference for looks.

I vote for the four dour version, it seems it would make getting into and out of the jeep much easier if you opened both doors.

Re: Need opinions on CJ body ideas

I like the 4-door version, but with a little twist. Hinge the front doors at the front, and the rear doors at the rear. Otherwise you'll have to have post of some kind going right through that area which will defeat the purpose of fold-forward seats and make getting into the rear a real PITA.

As for the doors themselves, you can probably use CJ-7 or YJ doors up front, and CJ-5 doors in the rear.

[/ QUOTE ] Wouldn't a pillar/post be needed at the point the doors join to act as a reciever of the latches?

Re: Need opinions on CJ body ideas

I wonder if you could make the doors latch on each other without them moving around when they're closed? I've thought of doing something like this in the distant future
cause I catch myself on the striker when getting into my jeep about once every two weeks. I think it'll probably be a lot easier for my to get some doors from a 80 or older CJ that doesn't use the post and try and make them work though.
