POLL: Would it have neg effects?

Ok so i got this crazy idea. I am building up this jeep and putting in some wide axles. Some people really like the narrowness of a jeep for wheeling, but the bigger you go the longer and wider you have to go for stability. So would it be better to have the wheels stick way out what ever they go through or hit wont effect the body which is one bennefit.

Or would it be cool to cut a line down the center of the tailgate, tub, windsheild frame, hood and grill and widen the entire setup. The way i look at it i am going to be putting a custom floor in the jeep anyway so that wouldn't be an issue.

Tailgate would be easy
Grill would be easy
Cowel and fire wall wouldn't be bad
Hood could be tricky
I am probably gonna make tube fenders so that elimates that
And i would have to go to a lexan windsheild to fit in the custom windshield frame.

So what do ya think?
Who is gonna help me because i can measure LOL AND
Who wants to donate a CJ grill, hood, tailgate and YJ windsheild frame to see if it can be done?

Why? Any good auto glass shop should beable to cut one out of laminated glass. Its just flat glass and you can get the rubber by the foot.

Re: POLL: Would it have neg effects?

I guess that's one way to get the 9 slot look of the WWII MBs!

Sorry, I can't really help with any ideas on this one....I've helped shorten and lengthen rigs before (usually to fit a welder, or make a longer frame fit a shorter body), but I've never played with the width before.

Man, that sounds very cool! If you decide to do it, you need to post pics!

Re: POLL: Would it have neg effects?

boy i wish you had pics too. I have never seen anything like it. The tailgate is exactly what i had in mind. And if i can get the rubber seal for the windsheild and a custom glass made i would be ahead of the game. I imagine i can cut the windsheild wiper control arm and lengthen it no problem. Maybe add a third wiper not that i need it.

Anyone know what the width is of a fullsize truck? I dont want to be that wide. And what is the stock width of a Jeep?

Re: POLL: Would it have neg effects?

Well, the tub on my cj7 is 59 inches wide, don't have a full size here to measure.
I'm wondering what you would do for body mounts. Extend the ones off the frame? or relocate the ones on the tub? Or maybe cut the crossmembers and widen the whole frame.
Just thinking........................................

Re: POLL: Would it have neg effects?

1. That's been done.
2. There was a machinest who split a CJ7 down the middle and "widened" it.
3. By the time he was done it looked like Willies version of a Hummer.
4. I'll search for the article, scan and email it to you.
5. Be patient for the article, it will take some time to find.

The article showed it parked next to a regular size CJ... and it made the CJ look anemic. IMHO... pretty cool, but I'd hate drive the thing in Boston.

Re: POLL: Would it have neg effects?

I actually know someone who did this. He widened it 12" and lengthened it 12". He said the hood wasn't that bad, neither was the tailgate or custom frame.
He said the cowl was the worst because it is made out of so many pieces. He said the grill was kind of a pain also to keep everything square. Of course this was an M38a1 so it could have been constructed different.
The thing is pretty cool looking. Nickmil.
