4WD Jumping in and out of gear

About a month ago, my 89 'YJ started having some 4x4 issues. This is pretty poorly timed, as we're heading into a Chicago winter, which means lots and lots of snow.

My four wheel drive engages immediately when i drop it into 4x4high. If I accelerate gently, it will stay in gear. However, if I accelerate at any other rate than "gently," the 4x4 light turns off momentarily, then comes back on when I let off the throttle.

4wdlo is the exact same way. Is this a vacuum problem? All of my hoses are connected at the front axle, and routed properly. I haven't had time to drop the skid plate and check for connections on top of the transfer plate. Could it be a fluid-related issue? Someone please tell me this is going to be a cheap fix and not a rebuild :-)

Re: 4WD Jumping in and out of gear

I'm not 100% sure but my thoughts are that when you accelerate hard your losing vacuum (which is normal) and that loss turns off the light but you may still have 4wd. Also if I remember right there is a vacuum canister to stop this and it may have a check vavle gone bad (if it has one), the can may have a hole in it or a bad connection.

Are you sure your accually losing 4wd or is it just the light?

Like I say I'm not a 100% sure on this and maybe someone with more experiance with this system will have your answer or set me straight if I'm wrong.

Re: 4WD Jumping in and out of gear

the shifter isn't jumping out of gear, is it? if not, i say go ahead and replace the entire 4wd vacuum harness.. its only about $40 at the dealership...
