Chevy ignition sucks

My 74 Cj-5 has a 304 with a chevy ignition in it (with the window to allow water to screw up the points) I was wondering if anyone has ever changed over to a FORD electronic ignition , like is in a 75 Cj-5 (just happen to have one as a parts Jeep)

I converted the chevy to a aftermarket electronic & it sucks too ....

Re: Chevy ignition sucks

I could be wrong, but I think it just has an old points dist. and not a "chevy" one. I also don't think you can drop in a HEI into an AMC V8 either. I would say your cheapest bet would be to scavange a duraspark ign. system out of a newer (late 70's) AMC 304 complete with wiring. I thought TR had posted some wiring on how to do this a good while back. Other than that.......you can buy an HEI for the V8 AMC off DUI. But thats big $$$$.

Re: Chevy ignition sucks

I wouldn't think AMC and chevy are interchangable either, but he thinks he's got a chevy motor and wants to try a ford dis.

what the heck?

Re: Chevy ignition sucks

I was guessing since he said 304 it was AMC. I know lots put chevy engines as a swap in the jeeps but I know of no chevy 304's.

Re: Chevy ignition sucks

Here is a link to TR's ignition upgrade,
http://www.swbbbs.freeservers.com/teamrush.htm
if you do a search on this bbs you can find a LOT of talk about both the GM HEI and the Ford Duraspark. Good luck trying to decide which one is for you. IMHO it sounds like personal preference to me. I'm very tempted to try the Ford route (TR upgrade). Just waiting for the $ to fall from heaven.
You can also look at this site too. http://www.trailhed.com/duraspark%20upgrade.html
Hope this helps.

Re: Chevy ignition sucks

V8 AMC and Chevy distributers turn in opposite directions.
On my 77 304 I swapped out the prestolite to a point dist. from a 72 and it ran a lot better. Even if you do get rid of that window remember all dist have a vent someplace and water will get in anyway.

The fan and belts really throw the water around a electric fan you can shut off helps a lot. Also next time your at the junkyard look around for 80's models Fords for the rubber boot they put around the dist. I've done that to many AMC V8s and they will hardly ever get wet just make sure you have the seam and wires exit to the rear.

Re: Chevy ignition sucks

Does AMC use a Chevy cap?

Seems like just recently I saw someone offering a big boot
to go over distributor caps. Jeggs, Summit, JC Whitney?

We used to use an inner tube from a smaller tire, like a
small foreign car. We'd cut it to about a 1 foot length,
with no split, then tie wrap it over the distributor, wires
out the top. Ugly, but did the trick.

As a matter of fact it did on some models with the Delco ignition. The early 70's I think, can't remember for sure. The AMC 304-401 was used in a lot of vehicles other than Jeeps and its easy to find different applications of the motors and components within the AMC lines.
