Timing Chain CLacking noise 2.5L

on my buddies 89 2.5L, it started making this CLACKing sound from the front of the motor around idel, if u move it to about 1400rpms and higher it does away, the engine runs fine, it just makes that sound any ideas?? could it be the timing chain? do those go bad? thanks!

How many miles does your buddy have on his 2.5L If it is coming from the front of the motor, and goes away as rpm go up... Have you ruled out the fan clutch, or fan. I would think that if the timing chain was going bad it would make noise all the time.... just a thought, I won't pretend to know anything about timing issues.
