Help.......trying to get tires to fit

"My brother recently bought a 97' Wrangler in which we just installed a 3.5 inch RE lift. He is now eager to stick some 33" tires on there, but the tires we have tried just don't fit. We first tried 12.5's, which did not come close.. Then I pulled off one of the 31 10.5" wheels on my stock TJ and those rubbed the frame on his as well.
Can anyone tell me if this should be the case... We were under the impression that we would be able to fit a fairly wide 33" tire with this lift..."

Re: Help.......trying to get tires to fit

Watch the back spacing on the wheels. The lift will help clear the fenders, but without the correct back spacing on the wheels, the tires will rub the frame and swaybar. Hope this helps...

Re: Help.......trying to get tires to fit

If in fact the tires are rubbing on the fenders then I think you have a problem. 33's should fit pretty well with a 3.5 inch lift. If they are rubbing while turning then you have a few options.
A. Get new wheels with less backspacing. I think 3" or 3.5" will work. Although I am not sure, a TJ person will be able to tell you better
B. Adjust the steering stops so that the wheel wont turn into the spring, swaybar, or what ever it hits. That migth be the way to go now, that will save you some money now, and you can always get new wheels later on.
C. You could probably get some wheel spacers for the wheels he has now. ALthough this is also not a bad temp fix, it is generally not looked highly apon.

Hope that helped a little.
