Will a lockout hub release under pressure?

This is another of those projects I bought the parts for years ago and never got around to doing. I've got Summers Bros. full floater rear axles and bought the lockout hubs to fit. I normally just park the Jeep with the tranny in gear, the e-brake on the Caddy rear disc conversion doesn't work very well. If I were on a hill and somebody came along and turned knob, would the Jeep roll off. Looks to me like it would remain engaged if it were under pressure.

No, I'm not the eternal pessimist, just realistic about human nature. I figure if enough people see lockout hubs on the rear of a Jeep, one of them is going to have to turn them to see if they are functional.

Re: Will a lockout hub release under pressure?

I would say there is a good chance it would disengage. The reason I say this is that sometimes my Dana 300 t-case will bind and I can't shift it out of 4lo after having the front end locked with a locker and wheeling on high traction slick rock. Just unlocking the hubs frees the front axle up so the t-case can be shifted. Seems to me this translates to what you are talking about pretty well.

I wouldn't expect that it would disengage, but after reading Brad's post, my suggestion would be to do a test. Tie the Jeep to a tree with a tow strap and see what happens. Different hubs might behave differently.

You could take the hubs apart and drill and tap the dial for a set screw.
