OLD Warn 8274 question

I have a chance to get a really old warn 8274 I guess it is so old it only has freespool out, but has a recently rebuilt motor. How old are we talking here? Is it worth getting it for $350 or should I stick to a new winch? thanks Mike

Re: OLD Warn 8274 question

Well me and pontiac (Jim) both have those old warn/bellview style uprights. They are strong as a newer 8274 and just as fast. They have manual controls for the brake and to engage or disengage. While they are set up to run in only, another motor can be put on to make them reverse (gears are straight cut). Good winch, I would try to talk him down on the price (unless it has the auto brake then I would buy it today.....). I bought mine working for $150.

Re: OLD Warn 8274 question

They are a tuff winch. Very fast and very powerful. The manual brake is a pain but i am working on a fix for that. Mine is around 35 years old. When bellview was building the winch they were rated for 6000 lbs. Warn only kept that rated for a year then up the winch to 8000lbs. There is no difference in the motors, Warn just uped the rating. I have out pulled the warn 9500 with out a problem. For $350 thats alittle steep. I paid $250 for mine but it was perfect. For a good used one look to pay between $150 and $300. Mine should have easily sold for over $300. Motors are still made for that winch. I just had to buy one. My fault.

Re: OLD Warn 8274 question

Mine is an '82 model so it's not as old as pontiac's and Greenmachine's. But it works excellent. I had to replace the remote but I'm totally happy with it. I got mine free from an old scrapped Air Force ambulance. Nothing like a good junkyard.

Hooch,
I'd like to say thanks for the web site also.

Re: OLD Warn 8274 question

You could try to contact Warn, I've gotten some manuscripts and parts from them. They've been pretty helpful to me on the phone also.

Re: OLD Warn 8274 question

Warn wont tell you anything about the bellvue winch. They will send you a copy of the parts breakdown though. The in and out motor, i havent got that far yet. But i am sure it would be a 250 dollar motor. You would just have to match up the bearing, mounting, and power, for a reversable motor. When i burned my motor out. I wanted a reversable but i didnt have time to mess around so i just got the replacement one.
