Time too Service T4 transmission

I just bought a 1983 CJ7 with a T4 transmission, and I have just changed all the fluids in the Jeep, getting it ready for Winter.

Except for the T4 transmission.
I noticed that the Housing is aluminum, so I figured the transmission needs some type of Automatic transmission fluid or a good quality motor oil for lubrication.

I assume by the size, it will hold around 3 qts?

Any help would be appriciated.
Thanks Your new Member SiverBack.

Yep, Dexron II/III ATF. Think its 2 qts., but anyway you just fill til it starts coming out the fill hole.

Re: Time too Service T4 transmission

Ok: Filled it up with Mobil 1 ATF.
While I was at the store I bought a Haynes repair manual for Jeep CJ.

And looking at the Recommended Lubricants and fluids page.
The lubricant recommened for the T5 and T4 which I assume are bascially the same, except for one more gear.

Is Jeep Manual Transmission Lubricant (part No. 4874464).

Can anyone tell me what exactly this lubricant is?

Something that will cost you lots of money and no one uses.

I think mine has 90wt gear oil in it. Maybe that's why its getting hard to shift.

Re: Time too Service T4 transmission

Mine had some very thick Goo in it.
smelt like Chain Saw Bar Oil.

WoW what a differance (Mobil 1 ATF) Made.
Smooth as silk shifting plus very smooth and quiet.
