NP207 Input Shaft Swap?

Hi,
I have a 87 YJ with a manual transmission with a NP207 transfer case. The rear case has a crack in it (I didn't do it) but it otherwise looks ok. I have obtained a NP207 from a Jeep with a automatic transmission with 23 spines on the input shaft. Being a frugal kind of guy, I would like to put the input shaft from the 21 spine TC in the 23 spine TC and put it back in my jeep. Everything inside looks the same but they don't look like they just drop in place. Is what I want to do something a backyard mechanic can do or do I need to spend a gizzilion dollars on a bunch of fancy tools. I know I should buy the NP231 but if I have to buy that before Christmas, I will have to give my two boys each a NP207.
Thanks,
Mike
