Going Howell TBI, but the \'82 needs a bung-where?

Hey SWB's. I'm hoppin' over from the mid-size board.

My brother's CJ is going to get fuel injection sometime in the spring. It's an '82, so the manifold is not made for the O2 sensor. Since he isn't driving it this winter, I figured I could throw in a bung and have it ready for when he gets the Howell set up. SO, my question is, where does the bung sit. Is it actually in the manifold, or is it in the downpipe?? Anything else I should do to prepare for Operation-get-rid-of-crappy-Carter?? Thanks for the help!

You drill a hole in the manifold, just above the down pipe and weld in a bung. The bung receives the 02 sensor.

I just wish I could remember where I scabbed this Jpg...

My '82 had a threaded hole in the manifold. It is just above the flange for the front exhaust pipe section. There was a large cap rusted in there. It came out with some PB blaster and a large breaker bar. The threads were the same as the Howell O2 sensor. If necessary, I think you can actually weld the bung into the top section of exhaust tubing just before the manifold. That way you aren't drilling/welding cast iron.

Later,
Tom

Sweet! I haven't looked at it yet, but this weekend I'll check it out. Thanks for the help and it's nice to hear the Howell O2 will fit! I can't wait to do the conversion.

Thanks so much!

you can weld a bung anywhere before the cat in the front pipe but the closer to the manifold the better because it will get to operating temperature faster
