Re: ? axles are in a 79 Cherokee

they are.. but they are wide.. very wide.. about 66" wide.. and most of the rear axles are offset... due to the quadratrac transfer case.. but if its got anything else for a tranny... then it will be center.. 6 lug

Re: ? axles are in a 79 Cherokee

Also, they are SUA. I put a front in my narrow-track by taking about 10" out of it, and that left it a couple inches longer than stock.

The rears are AMC 20 Heavy Duty, and like JeepGod says, are offset to work with the QuadraTrac. I thought about shortening only the long side, but the pumpkin would still be pretty far from centered. If it doesn't have QuadraTrac, the rear is a good axel, but awfully long.

Re: ? axles are in a 79 Cherokee

front and rear dana 44s!

if the chereokee is a wide track ( fender flares and 3rd and 4rth digits of VIN they are 65+ inches wide as JeepGod said)

if its a narrow cherokee ( they arent nearly as common as widetracks,m but outthere) they have 2 or 4 doors, no fender flares, and a 16 for 3rd and 4rth VIN digit)

the rears from 1979 and older are dana 44s, from 1980-1986 are Heavy duty amc20s, and from 1987 or so until 91 ( end of production) back to dana 44s.

all 6 on 5.5 bolt pattern

and the rear axles on FSJs are Spring over, the fronts are spring under.

I thought that the '79 I got my front axel from had a AMC20HD in back. Well, there goes another star

Re: ? axles are in a 79 Cherokee

maybe so jim, that was the changeover year, im not saying it for sure has to be a dana 44 in 1979, but the odds are good its a 44, probably better than a few hundred to 1 , based on the junkyards ive seen.

but being AMC, hell it COULD be anything.

im running out of stars quickly here also!

Re: ? axles are in a 79 Cherokee

Full-Size Jeeps...
Wide-Track axles are ~65" wide
Narrow-Track axles are ~62" wide
'67-79 D44 rear
'79-85 AMC20 rear
'86-91 D44 rear

D25, D27, D30, and D44 front axles have been used. The '79 will have the D44 front though.

'79 was a heck of a year, all sorts of parts being phased out and/or phased in
