spring eye holes

Hey people,

been thinking of having some custom springs made by a company here in town, Only hitch is that the guy said he couldn't bend any smaller than a 2" diameter eye hole for the spring. Anyone know what the stock eyeholes are? if smaller than 2" any thoughts on why I couldn't go larger, so long as I increased my shackle to accomodate? Obviuosly the bushings would then be an issue, but I'd imagine the spring shop could help me out on that one.

Re: spring eye holes

no one can even say roughly how big the eyeholes are on the leaf springs? What about YJ springs. anyone recall an estimate of how big around that bushing was that you put in there No thoughts on wheather a 2 " Inside diameter would cause problems that I'm not forseeing???

Thanks

Re: spring eye holes

Well, you're a little late, I had a full set of bushings laying around for several months but I used them when I replaced the frame. Then, I had the metal shells from the OEM main eye bushings in a bag of trash that I put out on the curb Friday. I'd guess the main spring eye is about 1-1/2" I.D. I do still have an old bushing from the shackle eye, it is 1".

Re: spring eye holes

I have a yj spring out in the shop; the shackle end is 1 1/4" ID and the main eye is 1 1/2" ID.

I don't see a problem with running a larger eye. I am currently running waggonneer springs in a SOA configuration on my CJ. I flipped the fronts end for end to gain a couple inches of wheelbase, which put the large eye up front; I don't know what it measures, but it is pretty close to 2", and it works fine.
Well, except for bending both main leaves on the shakedown run ; I think that is a function of shcakle angle and spring rebound, though.

Re: spring eye holes

I'm going to be taking my axles out today so I'll measure and post sizes later.

Re: spring eye holes

Front & Rear hanger are both 1.5" and it looks like 2" would fit with no problem. I'm sure if they make springs they will have the bushings you need.
