258 Won\'t Start PLEASE help!! need to get it going

OK, I did some searches but didn't come up with what I was looking for. We've been working on a 1983 CJ-7 with the 258 engine, Carter carb, and auto transmission. We've put a new cam, new lifters, new timing set, and new push rods & rocker arms in (PO started the priject) We just rebuilt the awful Carter 2 barrel BBD carb. Now that we've tried to start it...it won't go. It turns over nicely but it backfired...sounded like an M-80 going off. SO we tried moving the distributor...and then we get fire shoooting up out of the carb. This we know....TIming should be close, getting spark (not 100% positive) Fuel getting to carb. What we're not sure on is.....vacuum lines, carb tuning...anything else i might be missing. As far as we can tell the Nutter bypass has been done on this Jeep. If anyone has any Ideas please let me know ASAP...like to get it going tonight if we can!! Well back to work now to see if I can figuire it out. Thanks in advance

Sounds like you are getting spark, (backfires through carb). Just an assumption on my part but it sounds like you have the distrb. off a few teeth or the timing chain was not set just right. You made a lot of changes to the timing system and it could be any one of these. First you should pull the #1 plug pull it up to #1 postion using the old finger in the hole tech. or use a compression guage. Then check the rotor position and see if it is any where near the #1 plug location on the cap. When you put the push rods and lifters in did you get the proper length push rods and are you uing hydraulic lifters or solids. With solids you may have the adjustment to tight not getting full closure on the lifters. Thes are just a few of the possibilities.

Ran into the same problem once. The new cam was 180 degrees off with the way the timing sprocket bolted on compared to the stock cam. It's not a problem, you just have to remove the distributor and rotate it 180 degrees. If you want, you could do what we did and move the spark plug wires 180 degrees on the cap.

Taz, you hit that nail on the head.........after I read your post I got to thinking about it, and if it was 180 degrees off then it would be firing on the exhaust stroke and therefore the fuel was exiting VIA the carb. made total sense. So we went out and flipped the distributor cap 180 and now she's running......Thanks a whole bunch !!!
