Buying a CJ-7

Went and looked at a cj 7 tonight. The thing is in awesome shape no rust, rebuilt motor only 60 k on it, new tires, a lot of new parts all the reciepts to show as well. The guy is gonna scrap it. So I am gonna offer him 500 for it. Oh yea has new mirrors light bar still in box. He was tired of spending money on it, it failed emmissions so he gave up. I guess he isn't a real jeep guy which is sweet for me. The weird thing is he said it is an 87 but it's a cj-7 Is that right I thought that the 87 were the ugly headlighted models

Re: Buying a CJ-7

What do you mean by scrap it? It's a clean, running CJ-7? Wow, sounds like a good deal if you can get it for 5 bills. And yes, you're correct, if it's a CJ-7 (cool round headlights ) than it's an '86 or earlier. '87 was the first year for the Wrongler (JK). Regards,

Wow, that is a great deal. Good find for you, congrads, and you are correct, 87 was the very first year of the Great, even light, perfect glair, warm feeling, fun loving head lights.

Re: Buying a CJ-7

He might have swapped a CJ front clip onto the YJ.... is the speedometer in the center of the dash?

Re: Buying a CJ-7

Not sure on the speedo due to I never checked inside yet but I could see a aftermarket tack mounted to the right of the steering wheel on the top of the dash, pretty sure it had a shift light on it as well, pretty fancy for a jeep in my opinion. I am going down tomorrow to pick it up so I will get a better scan at it. I think I will only own Jeeps with round lights now, They remind me of something

Re: Buying a CJ-7

A quick peek at the dash should be a dead give away as to what it is. I would have to think that a yj with a CJ front would be pretty cool in and about it self.

Re: Buying a CJ-7

If the fuel filler is below the right taillight it is a CJ tub, if it's under the license plate (below the left tail light) then it's a YJ tub...that is if it's not been modified out back as well. The CJ's have a flat, steel dash (some have a vinyl pad on top) with a center mounted spedo. YJ's have the plastic dash with the spedo above the steering column.
