Heater Upgrade

We're trying to get more (any) heat into lirpasues CJ5 since we're back in Ohio now. I've read in the archives about the heater upgrade and it souns like what we're looking for. Does anyone know if this upgrade is good for a 1974 CJ5? It looks like everyone else is doing this upgrade on later model CJ's.

Re: Heater Upgrade

This GM Blower Motor upgrade works for '78-'86 CJs. 1977 was a brake over year for the heater box. Some 77 had the later model box, and the earlier units had the earileir mode heater box. The eariler heater box can't be adapted without a lot of cuttin' , weldin', cussin' and frustraion. If your heater motor extends through the firewall (under the battery tray) then you should be able to do the swap.

For earlier CJ heater boxes This and This may help.... This is a JU search... be patient, it does work and is good information on upgrading an earlier CJ heater box with GM parts.

Re: Heater Upgrade

I did the heater upgrade on my 80 CJ-5 and on a 77 CJ-7. It worked just the same. Can't say for sure about an older CJ-5, but I think all the heater assemblies are basically the same. It was quick, simple, and effective.

Tip: by some window strip seal strips to make a replacement seal for the motor base, as the old one will not fit properly.

Re: Heater Upgrade

I recently upgraded my heater. I do not know if this will work on the later CJ5's but it was easy on my 78 CJ5.
