Temperature Gauge Question

I was looking for a mechanical water temp gauge for my '89 Wrangler -I6 and noticed most of the gauges in the 4WD Catalog were not compatible with the AMC 6cyl. Most were Autometer. What is the deal here, I thought they were installed in the same place as the sending unit using a piece of threaded pipe and a joint. Can someone shed some light on the problem with AMC 6cyl installation of temp gauges?

Just guessing on this, but if it is anything like our 304, the problem is that the hole that the electric sender goes in is too tiny to take a bulb for the direct-reading gauge. There is a larger hole in the manifold, but it has the CTO valve in it. I guess you could tee in under the heater hose, but even that is taken by some smog setups with another CT valve tee'd in under the heater water outlet.

Re: Temperature Gauge Question

There are two 3/8 pipe plugs on the drivers side, lower engine block that you could use to install a mecanical temp guage. You will probably need an adapter from autometer or stewart/warner to fit the 3/8 pipe. I used one in a V-8 AMC with no problem. (same size pipe plug)
