motor and tranny options for 80 CJ5

HI

Would anybody be able to know what the motor and tranny options were for the 1980 Cj5. I own a 80 CJ5 but it has a 4.3l V6 chevy, dana 300, sr4 tranny. Planing to swap motors soon but dont want to do another 6 and definitly do not want a 4. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. THANX

Re: motor and tranny options for 80 CJ5

i have had the same cj5 since 1990. it came with a 258 I6, t-176 tranny and d300 (of coarse 1980's have the short shaft version). then in 94-95 time frame i swapped in a ford 351w and np435 granny low 4 speed. now i run a 99 vortec350, th400 auto, and an atlas t-case. in 1999 i lengthened my jeep to a 100" wheelbase. i bring this up because unless you lengthen it it is hard to fit an auto tranny in a cj5. especially if it is lifted. if you don't lengthen it i sugguest sticking with a granny low 4speed connected to your d300. it depends on what motor you use as to which 4 speed. if you run a chevy then use a sm420 or sm465. if you run a ford run a np435 or a t18. just my op.
