Please Help Identify Engine

I have been driving around what I thought was a '79 258. That's what the title says. The previous owner put in a reman engine at one point, but I understood it to be a direct replacement. It broke. (See my other post if interested.) In the process of fixing this, I took it apart and started looking for some replacement parts. I need a valve, some push rods, a couple rocker bridges, gaskets... One of the parts guys I talked to told me that I don't have a 258. I have a 232... ?

It has the rocker and bridge style with the pivot separate from the bridge. He says this is the "newer" style and could mean the head is from '81 or newer. Or these were just put on an older head. I believe the valve cover is the "old" design. Would this fit on the newer head?

The block has the marking 211E10. He says this means the block is a '78 232.

1) Is he right, the block is a 232?
2) How do I tell what era the head is?

I need a replacement valve, which I have to order depending on what type of head this is. The rest of the parts are common I believe- gaskets, push rods, rockers, etc.

Any thoughts?

The 258 and232 share the same components EXCEPT the crank and rods. The parts guy should look up the numbers and not assume that you don't have what you think you have. If you have the head off measure the stroke. The 232 is 3.4 something. The 258 is 3.9 depending on which book you read.(3.895) There are 2 or 3 different heads depending on the head bolt size and the valve cover shape. The valve cover gasket should be the only gasket that won't interchange. There are some really good posts on here if you can figure out how to access them. I haven't mastered it yet so maybe one of our resident computer guys can come to your rescue.

Thanks. The head is what I am most concerned with so I can get the right gasket and valve. Anybody know how to tell the difference?
