Help please - motor acting wierd, strange symptoms

'85 360/MC 2150/TF 727

Jeep just doesn't run well. It has started to barely idle. It hates warming up (start. die. start. feather gas. die. start - do this a few times, then it runs). Once warm, it runs, but it feels like it's barely running. Super quiet, but decent rpm. Just weak. As if the spark is weak. Then today I'm driving from the gas station, and it dies at like 30mph. I'm coasting in drive for about three seconds after it dies, then a HUGE backfire. I put it in neutral and start it. It starts right up, but still runs weak.

Assuming this is an ignition system thing and not a carburetor thing, the current ignition system is: Optima red top, standard Ford ICM, Accel wires, standard cap and rotor, standard distributor and special coil with built in voltage regulator (per the suggestion of a mechanic a couple years ago).

Would the TR upgrade help?

I'm giving odds on a vacuum leak.

Re: Help please - motor acting wierd, strange symptoms

I've looked all over for vacuum leaks. All the hoses are connected. None are cracked or anything. I've been fiddling with the carb for months trying to get it to run right. I guess I can either have the carb rebuilt or do the TR upgrade, but I wish I knew which one would solve the problem!

I'd wager your problem is timing. Sounds like you're running way retarded. That or your accelerator pump might be going south.

Could be a centralized vacuum leak ..like a cracked PCV hose or something like that. Have you checked your timing? Does it have an EGR valve? They can reek havoc if open when at cold start. How about a little more info?

Does it miss at all? Does it do okay at highway speeds ..or is it basically like driving through wet cement all the time?

Did you do that "look" with a vacuum gauge or just a visual? Get a gauge on it and note the reading and whether it is steady or fluctuates. A vacuum gauge will tell you more about a non 'putered engine than any other tool. For ECM controlled it's a toss up with a good real time scanner.

Grounds are another possibility, as is fuel pump and ignition module. I'd still start with the vacuum though.

Re: Help please - motor acting wierd, strange symptoms

I've got my money on a carb problem. Take it from someone who just this week had his YJ/258/carterbbd die out on him while in drive at 30mph... I'm not sure exactly what the problem was with my carb but replacing it with a refurbished carb cured it right up, along with a bevy of other problems i'd been having (rough idle, poor gas mileage, etc.) I suppose you could rebuild it if you wanted to save some cha-ching as well...

Checked the timing by ear. No, I'm not an expert by any means. The EGR port on the intake is covered by a gasget and a chunk of aluminum. The motor doesn't miss. At higher rpm it runs much stronger. I don't have a vacuum guage. I know I should get one.

[/ QUOTE ]So how then do you know it was the carb and not just the gasket that you replaced with it?

Hehehe, I like the way you think ol' three star!

I've used a small torch to "look" for a vaccum leak on my old BMW. Don't light it, but crack the valve just enough to let the gas out. Now move it along the hoses and edges where it is likly to leak. If your engine revs up, you've found at least one of your leaks.
