Spare tire carrier hub?

I'm getting ready to start work on my rear bumper tire carrier in my welding class. I've had an idea floating in my head of using an old D44 hub to mount my wheel to, and to put a Warn locking hub in it to use as a spare. How hard would this be to do, and how would I go about it? Thanks!

Here is another idea to put in your head and should give you an idea on how to do it your way too.

Re: Spare tire carrier hub?

I replaced my AMC 20 axles with Summers Bros. full floaters so I had the old hubs laying around. I had one turned out on the inside until it slipped over a 2" o.d. tube, welded it on and went from there.

In2mud, thanks for that link. I found it a couple years ago, lost my bookmarks and couldn't' find it again.

Re: Spare tire carrier hub?

I ended up using and old hub I had laying around for my mount. I didn't use the spindle and internals though. I welded two piece of tube to the back side of the hub (where the lugs go thru) and then attached it to the cage. I have a spare spindle/internals and warn hub laying around that I will eventually put on it.

Re: Spare tire carrier hub?

Any thoughts on why that link won't work?

I've had the same idea, using an old front hub the bearing spun in. One of these days.....

Campaigns to bearproof all garbage containers in some national parka have been difficult, because as one biologist put it, "There is a considerable overlap between the intelligence levels of the smartest bears and the dumbest tourists."

They must be having server problems. I can't get to the site either. Try again later it should work. Its worth checking out I thought it was a neat idea.
