97 TJ - Good deal?

I'm looking at a 1997 Wrangler Sport, 4.0L, 5sp, Alloy Wheels, A/C, Sound Bar, 69,600 Miles. Asking price is $9,595.00 Condition is excellent

How's it sound to you Jeep guys?

I want something to drive back and forth to work (80 mile round trip on interstate) and get 18-20MPG and still be able to get to the woods and hunt the weekends. I understand the TJ's are comfortable on the road. How good are they off-road in stock form? I'll be running on sugar sand trails with creek crossings of 6-18" of water.

I've found several 4cyl wranglers in the '92 to '95 range for $6k-$7k. Some seem to have acceptable power but most feel very underpowered.

I'd appreciate your opinions.

Also check to see if it has the dana 44 or 35 rear axle. The 44 is better but I don't think it was offered until 98.

Re: 97 TJ - Good deal?

Sounds like a good deal to me. According to the blue book value, you're right at the low end of retail value. The mileage is reasonable for the year and a stock TJ would work fine for what you plan to use it for. I believe you can fit up to a 31" tire with the stock suspension, but even without 31's you shouldn't have any problem crossing those streams. I've owned a couple of YJs and a stock TJ is a much more comfortable and capable Jeep by far. If I had to commute in a Jeep every day, I'd certainly choose a TJ over the YJ.

Besides, it's got round headlights so it has to be better.
