Sorta OT-Dodge D-50 Diesel into a Willy\'s?

Has anyone played around with the little (Mitsibishi?) 4 cyl diesel that came in the Dodge D-50s? My father has access to several, and we're thinking about swapping one into his 1963 Willy's Pickup to replace the basket case 226 "Super Hurricane". Are they a good engine? How about adapters? I know he can get the tranny, but not sure about transfercase....

Re: Sorta OT-Dodge D-50 Diesel into a Willy\'s?

I know nothing about the D-50, however a year or two ago I saw and artical in one of the 4by mags about putting 3 cylinder cummins in a willy's truck. Sorry I have no idea which one or when in any case it was likly a "take your jeep to the 4 by shop, wait two weeks, sign the credit card and drive off kinda deal".
The Super Hurricane 226 is actually a continental engine. I do not know if Jeep made them or bought them from continental. In any case it is a good engine. Most came with the venerable Carter YF carb, not a high power carb but simple used for many years and reliable. Some however had a 2 barrel that had problems. The 226 is a very low power engine makeing only about 100 (gross) HP compaired to the 258's ~110 (net) or ~150 (gross) HP. It was also heavy. However it was used for many many years in just about every thing that used an engine: forklifts, boats, generators, pumps, jeeps, trucks, ect.
