Frame swap advice needed, CJ3b onto CJ5

Well after taking 6 month off from the Jeep, the lonely cries from the garage can't be ignored anymore.

When I last left my 3b, I had a cracked frame (under the forward rear sping hanger), a sagging lift (nice jeep-lean) and some 2nd rate welding around the v8 engine mounts. I deemed the old fame a lost cause and picked of a 70 for a donor. I figured it would be a "easy" swap as the frame lengths are close and some of the body mounts my line up.

What I'm looking for is for some advice on how to proceed. Currently all the running gear is still under the old frame, and the engine, tranny and xfer case. I'm thinking that I'll swap the axles first to get the other frame rolling, then migrate the tranny/transfer case, noting the distance to the rear axle in the old frame. Then bring the tub over, centering the rear wheel well over the axle. Next bring the engine over, and reasemble the front clip. I imagine the front drive shaft length will change as will the steering linkage.

Any comments on the above or a link to a similar project?

Re: Frame swap advice needed, CJ3b onto CJ5

I was going to put a 2A on an early CJ5 frame, but i ended up scrapping the project. but I did find a bunch of info on the CJ3B website. Do a search on yahoo for it and it will have a tech section and you will find a writeup on it. I think if my 5 body ever dies, i will go the rout of putting a flatfender body on it. I still have the 2A grill, hood and windshield frame, so i can just get a body tub and fenders and be all good
Sound like you have a good thought about swapping things over. You will run into snags, but i dont think it will be anything big. Only big thing would be getting the V8 mounts welded in, but if you can do it, then you are the man

Good luck!!
