Windshield Glass removal on Project CJ

All right it's time for the questions to start. I am in the middle of a frame up rebuild of my CJ. The tub is a 89 YJ and the windshield is from a 94 YJ.
Here's a couple a pics of the progress so far.

My question is how do I get the glass out of the windshield frame. I have removed the glass rubber from the rear, and glass seam from the front. I tried to press the glass out and no luck. I thought I'd ask before I went for the BFH method. So what do you think?

Re: Windshield Glass removal on Project CJ

I removed the rubber from my windshield frame and the glass was stuck. I ended up breaking the glass trying to get it out. You just have to be carefull if you don't want to break the glass. Do you know if most glass companies have the rubber trim to for the glass when they instal it? Have you priced a windshield? How much was it?

Re: Windshield Glass removal on Project CJ

I ended up removing the glass with a utility knife, and the BFH method. I ran the utilty knife around the edge of the glass both inside and out. It actually came out pretty easy once the rubber seal was cut out.

I price glass at Jeeps Unlimited and they wanted $100 for new glass. I think I am going to paint the windshield frame and take it to someone to install new glass. That way it's guaranteed not to leak.

Re: Windshield Glass removal on Project CJ

The last time I checked it was about $90 for a windshield. I got the seal off eBay from the nice folks at Krage Motorsports. I have bought a few other things since then and have been happy with the sales and service from them. http://www.jeepdoc.com/catalog/zcata...#Fuel%20System

I took my old glass down and they cut me a new one for 40 bucks at the local glass store.

Re: Windshield Glass removal on Project CJ

It was safety glass. Since it's flat they just made a template of my old windshield and made a copy. Green tint was 5 dollars more.

Isn't the YJ glass glued in and the rubber on the front is more trim than seal?

Yep-YJ glass is held in by urethane. It has to be cut out. take the frame to a glass shop, they have the special tools.

Re: Windshield Glass removal on Project CJ

Special tools? Contractor knife worked great. Now the next piece of glass hopefully will have the seal already attached, because any piece of rubber on that frame was removed.

Oh I also updated those links so they work now, if you're interested in the progress. Check em out and let me know what you think.
