92yj/no start when raining

wifes' 92yj I6 Fuel Inj.
It turns and tries to start but doesn't kick over.
she is currently stuck at work with this problem. for the last 3 weeks it would eventually start after a little while of cranking it over. only when its raining does she have this problem. my first thought is the distributor cap has condensation in or on it. the jeep is garage kept, so mornings and nights its not a factor with the rain.. what do you guys think?

Yep, take the cap off and get a new gasket or line the original one with RTV...good call.

Re: 92yj/no start when raining

AAA dropped the jeep in my driveway. i pulled the cap and it was dry or so it seemed. i left the cap as it was and continued to try and start it. chugged a little but died. did that a few times, lots of gas smell in the cab... then all of a sudden she started right up. runs fine...shut her down, and she starts right up again. so maybe resealing the cap will end the problem.

is there any benefit to changing the original distributor cap and wires on a 92 ? thanks....as always...

You have a '92 and it hasn't been through a basic tuneup? Change the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs and see if the problem goes away.

i do believe i will though.
is there any particular company that is better than the rest? MSD,Accel, etc...Thanks

Re: 92yj/no start when raining

Without some sort of ignition upgrade, I'd stick with parts store premium parts - brass contacts on the cap, a decent set of wires, premium rotor, and plugs.

When there is humidity in the air, it makes it easier for borderline plug wires to arc to a ground instead of firing the plugs. Change the wires and the problem should go away. Might as well change the cap, rotor and plugs while you're at it. Look at http://www.shortwheelbase.com in the tech and ignition for the TeamRush upgrade too.
