Rear Tire carrier?

I want to put a rear tire carrier on my 2000 TJ but I dont feel like paying $500+ for one. I would like to fabricate my own but I was wondering if any of you had any pictures or ideas that I could use. I was thinking about using my stock tire support by welding supports on the back and posts coming up from my rear bumper. If anyone has any ideas, it would really help.

Re: Rear Tire carrier?

Check out www.jeepfabrication.com . They have some pretty neat plans for tire carriers.

Re: Rear Tire carrier?

That website has a lot of good plans to follow, but be careful about following them exactly. Your 36x14.5 spare (I ASSuME you're running a full size spare) will require slightly different measurements than most. It will need to be a little higher and the tire mounting surface will need to be a little further away from the Jeep. And gussett everything that you can. That is a lot of weight to be hanging off the rear of the Jeep. I have a 36x12.5 spare and it doesn't move over bumps, you just need to shake it with your hand, find out where something is moving, and add a gussett to eliminate it. Your total cost should be under $100, easily.
