Dana 30 Question...

Blew up my D30 Passenger Side U-Joint, and twisted the u-joint mounting area on the inner shaft as well...

I removed the inner shaft (that was twisted and was smacking the outer shaft/u-joint remains) (well half, since it's a 2 piece shaft)

Question: Will it be ok for me to drive in 2 WheelDrive with the shaft removed?

I have no plans on replacing it, just not doing any wheelin until my front/rear swaps are done...

Thnx.

Re: Dana 30 Question...

As far as I know, while in 2WD, the front DS doesn't do a thing. I've also read a post somewhere about this Jeeper that broke his front DS on the trail, and he just pulled it out & went back home (2WD, of course).

Re: Dana 30 Question...

I think you'll lose some gear oil out the axle tubes, but you should be fine to drive like that.

Re: Dana 30 Question...

Not exactly the same style axle, but a bud of mine has a D30 in his TJ (came from XJ) that doesn't have any axles in it. Not sure if there are even gears in the chunk for that matter . He's been running around with it like that for several months, waiting on D60s to be finished. After all, unlocked & in 2H or DS disconnected shouldn't spin anything internal and the spindles are lubed independently....go for it.

Re: Dana 30 Question...

Several months? Holy cow Batman! Has he ever taken apart a unitized bearing? If there is no axle shaft in place, the bearing can separate very easily leaving the tire skidding on the caliper and mount. There is little to nothing holding it together, and both mine came apart very easily when I changed the U-joints.

Yes, you can easily run a CJ D30 with no axle shaft in there. You'll want to plug the diff with rags or something to avoid having the gear oil leak out, and you may also want to stuff a rag into the needle bearings under the spindle so they don't get dirt in them.
