Re: What did you paint your axles with??

I used POR-15 on my last 2 scout D44 housings. It seemed to hold up well. It takes some time to clean and properly prep the housing. But I broke both those housings this summer, so I may just rattle can the next one. Not sure what I'm going to do on the 60 I'm building now. I still have some POR-15 left so I may use that.

Re: What did you paint your axles with??

Just use some of that engine enamal stuff and paint it a nice purdy color! Or I know that some put some POR15 on the axle, then covered it with engine enamal or rattle can paint. Personally I like the look of painted drivetrain components.

Re: What did you paint your axles with??

i have always used semi-gloss black.. until this set.. and i just used some dark blue i had lying around..
but the gloss will show the dirt and grime.. the flat will show the oil.. so semi i have found hinds both pretty much.. just wire wheel it.. then shoot.. i have had great luck.. only thing that i have found to take the paint off is the rocks..

I used a wire brush in a drill motor and then used rustoleum black on mine. (The cover didn't get brushed first though. I'll have to redo it sometime.)

Re: What did you paint your axles with??

I used a thin layer of spray on bed liner on mine. Just the cheap'o rattle can stuff. It seems to shed mud and grime better than just paint, that is if you give it time to cure before abusing it. There is also a lot more prep work if you want it to last.

Re: What did you paint your axles with??

On mine I just cleaned them really good and used Rustoleum semi-gloss black over the old paint. You just really need something for the paint to "grab" on to, like the old paint or a non smooth slick surface.

I do have an axle now that is down to the bare metal and thought about using some etching primer before the paint, but don't know if it would provide any benefit. Should I?

Re: What did you paint your axles with??

I had a friend that painted his ford 9 with hammerite and I think that looks pretty good.

Re: What did you paint your axles with??

I found excellent results using this stuff called FIX-IT brand roll-bar and chassis paint . Works great on bumpers too ! I wire wheeled my axles and used Tremclad Automotive grey primer , then put 3 coats of the roll-bat paint on . 2 years now and its still solid . Good prep job with go along way with any paint your going to use .
