Mixing and matching manual transmission parts?

My T176 is dying. I'm looking into a replacement. I found an older 3sp with OD transmission in an F100. It's from the same "series" of transmissions as my T176, it will bolt directly to my 5.0 bellhousing, but the tailhousing is just WRONG. So, I'm wanting to buy this transmission and see about swapping my T176 tailhousing onto it. That'll give me the OD that I crave, and the new tailshaft would act as the adapter I need to get the D300 working.

Does anybody have a resouce for dimensional information on these transmissions? I'm pretty sure I'll have to have a custom tailshaft made, but I'd like to do a little more investigating until I have all the parts scattered about. I realize it's not a bolt on application, but I'd like to be able to figure out HOW bad an idea this is.

Any ideas?

Re: Mixing and matching manual transmission parts?

Ok... change the channel. Where are all the transmission experts?

I've been cruising the 'net, and I found that the T176 transmission is very similar to the 3sp OD transmission used in 82-84 broncos. Supposedly the internals will swap. That means I should be able to keep my T176 and get me an OD fourth gear.

Now... I'm not sure if any of this is true. How would you investigate this? Does anybody have a 3sp OD from a bronco? Does anybody have any experience with these transmissions? Anyone??
