shackle reversal and other home made mods

what is the best way to make your own shackle reversal for a 77 cj5. Should the shackle mount below, on top, or in the middle of the frame. and should the front mounts be extended any. Should any other changes made like where the axles rests or should the body be cut. Right now i have 31" and eventually i want to run 33"s but i drive my jeep on road 95%. What kind of adjustments need to be made to the driveline. I'm looking do all my own fabrications so any suggestions on the reversal or any other mods would be greatly appreiciated. thanks for everyones help!

Re: shackle reversal and other home made mods

well.... I'd look at a company made one on a jeep, and see how I could make one better. 9 out of the 10 times, they have done it. All you gotta do is make it better

You will want to move the axle foward at least an inch to compensate for the movement backward under compression.

[/ QUOTE ]I thought I might find engineer in your bio. Find something that work so the pressure is off, then concentrate on making it better. Most so called engineers I work with just quit when they find the first thing they THINK will work.

Still, rule #1 is if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Re: shackle reversal and other home made mods

I designed the one that sycho linked to. it works VERY well, but you will need a long slip yoke to take full advantage of it. I would also suggest stretching the front axle forward about 1.5".
also..make sure you fully weld the shackle hanger on top of the frame. It never happened, but I'm always afraid the hanger will open up..
this set up produces massive amounts of flex.. I hope you have very long shocks and brakes lines

Re: shackle reversal and other home made mods

I would recommend NOT putting the shackle mount under the frame. The spring will then be over 6" below the frame and have a LOT of leverage from side forces at the wheels. My frame lasted less than a year after a shackle reversal like this before it cracked. It has since cracked a couple times around the same place. Either put the shackle at the top of the frame or in the middle of it and keep the spring as close to the frame as you can.

Re: shackle reversal and other home made mods

Here's a picture of mine. The frame cracked the first time at the right edge of the picture in the middle of the body bracket. The second time it cracked between the shackle mount and the body bracket.

Re: shackle reversal and other home made mods

And why do you think it cracked?

Also how old of a frame is this, was it re-inforced at all?
