Nutter Bypass/ No spark from coil

After rebuilding the 258 in my 84 CJ, I upgraded to an Offy intake, Heddman headers, and a Holley 4 barrel. With all these upgrades I chose to implement the Nutter bypass. Everything went fine until my coil overheated, because I forgot to intall the ballast resistor sent with the painless kit. After the ballast resistor was installed my new coil took a dump on me. One hundred dollars later I figured a stock coil would match the stock resistor best. Now my problem is I am not getting any spark from the new coil. Haven't had my ignition module checked yet, but could it be my pickup coil? Can you also explain or direct me to some information on how the coil, distributer, and ignition module work together? Still a greenhorn mechanic!

Thank You.

Re: Nutter Bypass/ No spark from coil

Do you have a digital voltmeter? If not, you should really pick one up. Radio Shack has a few nice autoranging models for about $20-$40. It will be helpful to diagnose the problem.

If you leave the key in the Run position for more than 20 minutes without the engine running, you'll most likely smoke the coil and ignition module.
