CJ Tail gate on a YJ Tub

I am in the process of rebuilding my CJ with a YJ tub. I am trying to figure out how to fab the tail gate hinges on the new body. I think I am going to drill holes in the rear plate, and weld nuts on a cover plate then weld the plate to the rear of the body. What do you think of that idea? Next, which way to the latches go...short side up or down.

Here's a couple of writeups that I remember off the top of my head.

Yeah, the write-ups that Will gave are good ones and so is this one:

I think in my tubswap article I just refer to Jeepskate's site when it came time to explain the tailgate attachment.

Re: CJ Tail gate on a YJ Tub

Deja vu all over again...
I've got a '94 YJ tub sitting up on sawhorses in the driveway that I'm prepping to go on my '86 CJ-7...CJ tailgate, of course.

Re: CJ Tail gate on a YJ Tub

I just have a real tough time cutting the underside of my new tub. I figure 12 gauge steel a couple drilled holes and some nice welds is an easy way to do it. Hell I'm not sure, it's all the same amount of work....Thanks guys

Re: CJ Tail gate on a YJ Tub

I put a CJ tailgate on my YJ. I just used a good 'ole Dremil to cut some slots underneath the tube. Then I slipped some 1/4" plates behind it and bolted into them. Simple as that.

Re: CJ Tail gate on a YJ Tub

jammy has the ideal... exactly what i did.. and with both side cords hooked to the tailgate.. ive had 2 35"x16"x15" boggers with 15x12 rims.. and my fat arse on the tailgate all at the same time.. and it held up fine..

thats why you want to use atleast some 1/4" steel backing plates behind it..
