How to ID gas tank size

My gas guage hasn't worked since I got my CJ so I just keep filling it every hundred miles or so. I have to drop the tank to troubleshoot the guage/sending unit and it has a decent size dent so I'm thinking of replacing it. How can I tell which size gas tank I have if I can't run the guage to E and see how much I can fit?
Thanks.

I believe all the metal tanks are 15gal, the poly tanks are 22gal.

Re: How to ID gas tank size

I think all CJ's from 72 on had 15 gallon tanks from the factory but I am not sure. Both plastic and metal 22 gallon after market tanks are made.

1) To find the volume of your tank you could do the obvious and carry a 5 gallon can of gas with you till you run out of gas. and than fill with the can and then top it off at a gas station.

2) You could also crawl under the jeep and measure the height length and width of the tank. Assuming you meausred in inches.

Volume in gallons = (height x width x length) / 231.

Re: How to ID gas tank size

My '83 has a factory plastic 20 gal. The 15 gal's were steel. Since you have a dent in yours, I would guess it's 15 gallons. The 20 gallon tank in my CJ hangs down to the center of the diff with 3" of spring/shackle lift. The 15 gallon tanks are tucked up pretty nice.

Re: How to ID gas tank size

I took a better look at it tonight and, the tank is plastic with the skid plate completely wrapped around both sides, front and bottom. The skid plate is what's dented but, it must not be hurting the tank if it's plastic and not leaking. Based on what you guys have said here, sounds like it's 20 gal.
Thanks for your help.

If you are looking to replace that dented factory "skid plate" (actually a hunk of rusted sheetmetal on my Jeep) Check out 4X Doctor. I got a killer skid plate from them that is 3/16" plate front-bottom-back and 1/8" sides. All welded and it fit great!
