Smittybilt Cage - Good/bad/ugly??

I am looking to get one. 4 wheel parts has free shipping until Friday and I thought I would order one and weld it myself. Anybody have opinions on the strength, design, or is there a better solution for around $110.00.

Thanks

I have the kit, have no problems with it. Read this post before you order from 4WPW.

Good kit, fits well. I used it as the basis for my cage. Can't beat it for the price.

I used it for the front part of my cage as well, quite a few people on here have with great results. Search back a few months on cages, and there should be some more info and pics.

Re: Smittybilt Cage - Good/bad/ugly??

I used it to for the front of my cage. Well bent, good diameter and thickness of tubing. I'd say go for it.

I positioned mine just rearward enough I can still pull down the visors. I can reach the parking brake release and press it down with my foot cocked sideways. Can't open glovebox, and have to open door partways to roll down window. Door handles need to be "indexed" so that you don't bust them off when you slam the door shut when window is up or down.

Does anyone know of an alternative source for close to the same price? I would be glad to give my business to someone who is straight forward.

Thanks for the good info.

Re: Smittybilt Cage - Good/bad/ugly??

I've got the Smittybilt cage also, and am very pleased with it. No problems with access to the emergency brake pedal. I did have to pull the bottom of the hoop in a couple of inches in order to clear the Wrangler steel half doors I've got on my CJ.

One recommendation is to get an extra set of spreaders. I've got two mounted in the middle, and one on each side for strength.

As far as shipping goes, I never could bring myself to pay upwards of $70 to get the hoop shipped. So, I went to a local truck accessory store that carried Smittybilt products. There aren't many Jeep/4x4 shops in my area. I had them look in their catalog for what I was looking for (got the product numbers from the Smittybilt website) and they ordered direct from their distributor. I did pay more for the hoop than what I could have bought them for by mailorder, but factor in shipping, and I came out ahead by quite a few dollars.

I got the smitty hoop too, no problem with it. You can also order from JCWhitney/CarParts.com http://www.carparts.com/parts/newsea...mp;itemid=2526

Yep, Smittybuilt has been used LOTS. I've done 4 now. Production unit #5 is custom. While the hoops are NOT as simple to make as one would expect, I like the fit on the custom jobs better.

Check out the running topic:

Lots of pics available there too.
