YJ tub with light fire damage. - Worth it?

Hey all,

I have a lead on a early 90's YJ. I haven't seen it yet but I have been told that it has very light engine fire damage and that continued through the firewal into the dash. Basically the dash just melted. My buddy says that I could probably pick it up for like $150. I know that the hard top is not included but I believe everything else is.

What would I look for when I loko at it? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

This is just the tub? or jeep? Anyway 150 sounds like it is worth it either way.

If there was a deal like that in my area I would have already picked it up.

Not sure if you understand the concern or not. Obviously a tub is worth that much. The concern is regarding the fire damage.

IF anybody can help me with my concern, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

There may be some distortion of the sheetmetal, but no loss in strength.

Other concerns would include that you have lost all coatings from the sheetmetal where heat has damaged it, such as paint, seam sealer and undercoating. You will have to treat those areas as bare metal, strip and sandblast, prime and reseal those seams before painting.

Other than that, I wouldn't be concerned that it had minor fire damage. I'd take it over rust damage any day!

If i was to use the tub on my CJ, I would completely herculine the inside, underside and firewall. So the paint thing isn't a concern. I am hoping to look at it this weekend.

Even if you herculine it, you should still seal and prime it first.

Re: YJ tub with light fire damage. - Worth it?

Where are you in S. Jersey? I ran across a YJ in a yard in Glo. County a week or so ago, but it was pretty well toasted. Not a "light engine fire", more like "fully involved fire". It had the slant rollbar so I know it's pre-'91. Rust was prevalent due to the paint burned off and would need complete sanding and repainting, but was solid overall I think. Lots of work but might be worth it if it could be had cheaply enough. I lifted the hood and the engine didn't look too bad, but there were a few non-crispified cherokees in the yard with 4.0 MPI's too so it didn't garner much of my attention. I also had my 5 yr. old son so couldn't spend much time on anything really.
