Got an NP208 now I need to know what\'s wrong.

I just got an np208 today and I'm wondering if anybody cangive me some tips on how to troubleshoot it without cracking the case. The PO said he thought that it had a bad shift fork or a bad chain. The price was right so I bought it any way. In what I think would be 2 hi if you turn the input shaft then the output shaft rotates. It will shift into all postitions but the front output shaft never turns. In either of the 4wd positions it kind of sounds like the chain is dragging but I'm not sure. I'm thinking that since the rear output shaft rotates with the input shaft that I could install it and it would work in 2wd, am I right? Anway does anyone have advice for trouble shooting this thing before it gets into the jeep?
Thanks for any help,

Yes, my brother has 2 of them that he broke, they work fine in 2WD, but nothing in 4WD. Exactly as your describe.

Sounds like the chain is busted. In those x-cases, the chain only runs in 4wd mode. There are a lot of places to get parts for these x-cases, and for relatively cheap, too.
