OT-Dodge first 4x4(History Channel Program!)

Ok, I am watching the Historys Channel modern marvels program. And, they are talking about trucks. Now, in the program they said that the dodge power wagon was the first 4x4 ever. I dont think that this is true. I thought the the Willys out before that?? I mean, what is going on here? Am I wrong or is the history channel wrong?

Re: OT-Dodge first 4x4(History Channel Program!)

There were quite a few predecessors to the Willys - Marmon Herringtons, Jeffrey "Quads", and some Dodges saw use chasing Pancho Vila after WWI, The Bantam BRC beat the MA into production as well. For the first commercially available factory 4X4 pickup, I believe it was indeed the Power Wagon.

No problem - I was recently thumbing through an old Petersen's 4WOR "old iron" issue and read something about it. My mind is like a sponge for useless trivia - to bad they don't have "4x4 Jeopardy!"

I agree, I think the Dodge was the first 4x4 pickup built by the manufacturer. The others were converted after they left the factory.

I want to know how Subaru can claim to be the first SUV? As far as I am concerned, the SUV was born in America!

Re: OT-Dodge first 4x4(History Channel Program!)

It's a little foggy, but I seem to remember that the Dodge Bros. did the first 4WD. It didn't have anything to do with production or pick-ups. It was back when Henry was developing the Model T, before Dodge became part of Chrysler and while vehicles were no more than a frame with an engine, wheels and a seat attached. It was experimental, inspired by early motorists being stuck in the wagon ruts.

Good question, Kriss ...

If Subaru claims to be the first SUV I wonder what that makes my Willys Station Wagon?

Re: OT-Dodge first 4x4(History Channel Program!)

The Willys Station Wagon was the rig that I had in mind as the modern day start of the SUV. Ford, in one of their Ads recently said that the Model T started it all even though it was not 4 wheel drive.

I stand by my original statement! (Besides, it wan't the Subaru that kicked Japans fanny in WW2. It was the Willys/Ford made Jeep!!!!!!!

Good Luck!

How about the Chevy Suburban (late '30s) or the old woody wagons? For 4WD I'd say Dodge Carryall was first.
