31\'s(locked) vs. 33\'s(open)

I'm trying to budget myself to how much money I spend on my Jeep. This has led me to realize that I can afford either:

1. 3.5"-4.5" suspension lift and 33" tires with the SYE and gears
or
2. 2.5" lift with 31" tires plus front and rear differentials (EZ lockers) and maybe a winch

so which one would you guys go with? which one could handle the tougher trails? thanks a lot, everytime i ask a question i'm suprised how many informative and polite responses i get
sorry if this was already asked, i couldn't find another post like this

Personaly I would go SOA, and 33s... if you have the $ regear now if not save up to regear, and get 35s...

If you do a 2.5-4.5 lift eventualy you will want bigger and end up doing it twice... SOA isn't much more than those 4.5" Lift Kits... and leaves you with TONS of options for the future...

That's my 02

Re: 31\'s(locked) vs. 33\'s(open)

Definitely go with the 33's and open diffs. Part of the problem with today's wheelers is they lock the diffs way too soon, not learning how to properly read a trail and pick a line. If you are open, you actually have to think about how to get past an obstacle. If you go with the smaller tires and are locked, then you'll get past it, you'll just drag all the way and mess something up. If you want to make it interesting, just separate the 2 rear e-brakes and set them up on different levers. This way, when you get twisted up, you can yank that brake and it'll get you going again.

The winch I always recommend though, it'll get you through anything, locked or unlocked.

If you go with the 33s today, then you will be ready when you can afford the lockers. JEEPN is right. You can do a lot of wheel'n with open diffs. I did for years.

It's kinda funny about the line you drive with or without lockers...I take the same lines now, with lockers, that I did with open diffs...the only difference is I actually make it now!

I agree that go with the bigger now because you will only have to pay again later. AND YOU WILL WANT TOO!!!
Other than that.......the locked 31's will get you farther than open 33's. No question about it 99% of the time. But resist the urge and "plan" form the future. Believe me whan I tell you many(most) of us have bought several lifts/MANY sets of tires/etc. as the jeeps grew up. Look ahead...........save $$$$$$$$$.

if your Rio Grand is a four , I'd go with the 31'' and stay there.

if you got a 4.0L , I would side with the 33'' bunch.

I would go with the 33" now and then you can save up for the lockers. This is my plan.
