Driving without axle shafts installed...is it ok?

Would it make it difference with handling if the axle shafts weren't installed on a front dana 44? I need to drive my CJ back home but I haven't got the axle shafts back yet. Do you guys think it'll be alright...I don't really see how it would hinder anything.

Thanks
Alec

The ONLY thing that can come of that is some of the diff gear lube getting into the tubes, assuming your diff is still full.

So if you have no axle shafts in the front end... wouldnt you jeep be neutered then??

Driving without the shafts whould hurt a thing, maybe you can put a rag in the open hole of the tube, so road debris don't get inside of the tube.

And a rag in the back of the spindle so nothing gets into the bearings.

Re: Driving without axle shafts installed...is it

It's definitely neutered though!! No axle shafts and no drive shaft!!! Those parts are still being done!! I pushed a rag into the backside of each spindle as well as both tubes, and I only put a bit fluid in the differential until I get the shafts back in.
I really need to bring my Jeep back home because it's blocking my dad's newly built garage and where they need to pour concrete for his driveway.

Thanks!!
Alec

Re: Driving without axle shafts installed...is it

Put a sponge in a zip lock baggie and stuff that in the end of the tubes.

Clean up the end of the spindle and use duct tape to seal it up good as there are roller bearings for the axle shafts in the inboard end of the spindles and if you get any gravel or debris in them they will be toast in no time. You may want to simply replace them at this time when you go to put the shafts back in. You get them in a kit with new seals for not too much $$$.
