258 rebuilt head

Just found a rebuilt head for a 258 for $50. I assume it is stock with no modifications. Is it worth it? How much would it cost to have one rebuilt? Sorry for the ignorance, but I have no idea. What should I look out for? I thought about acquiring this because my Jeep is high mileage and would have to do this eventually, anyway.

Re: 258 rebuilt head

1. The price seems good.
2. What's been done during the rebuild?
3. Get the specifics of the rebuild.
4. $50 would barely cover magnafluxing and hotanking...
5. A head rebuild price would depend on what's wrong.
6. One could:
a. Replace one or all the valves.
b. Replace the seals.
c. Replace one or all springs.
d. Replace one or all rockers.
e. Replace the valve seals.
f. Grind the Valve seats.
g. Resleave one or more valve guides.
h. Weld any cracks.

Ok, now you got some ideas... now go buy that Head! It should be a good spare.

Re: 258 rebuilt head

Thanks for the info, Leve. Now I know what to ask about. It can't hurt to have a spare at the very least!
