YJ steering shaft removal

Installed a 2" body lift. Need to get the shaft extended so I can steer. The worthless instructions state "remove shaft and extend it then re-install"

How the hay do I do this? I can't get the shaft out to start. I unbolted both pinch bolts and got them to slide; but the shaft woln't collapse to be removed but it woln't extend to fit on correctly either.

Maybe there is a trick to doing it - maybe not.
Just need a hand.

Re: YJ steering shaft removal

When I put a body lift on my ride, I had to remove the steering box to get the shaft out. The shaft has a little clip on it, and loosening that will allow you to extend it out further. I had to tap mine with a hammer to get it to extend, though. I guess the rust held it together pretty good. Good luck!

Re: YJ steering shaft removal

the shaft can rust up and not collapse. you can try spraying pb blaster up the slip-joint but it really needs to be upright and let the juice fall down in the shaft slip-joint which means you gatta get it out first. take the gear box off- don't remove the lines so you won't have to bleed. pb blast all the gear box bolts too. once you get the shaft out, you can spray it down good and let it set. mine broke loose and it collapses fine now. i put on a borguson shaft while i was at it and have the stock for a spare.

Re: YJ steering shaft removal

when i did my body lift in 95, my kit 'recommended' i lengthen my steering shaft. i never did. never had a problem with the shaft length. just wore out the u-joints. did alot of wheeling with it at stock length, i dont think you'll have a problem either.

i replaced mine with a flaming river model when i replaced the box and pump.
