is there a specific tool for \"c-clips\"? (not axle)

there is a "c-clip" holding the mainshaft of the 231 tcase to the rear subassem(spedo part)-- you'll see it if you remove the rear-cone.. i've been able to remove the c-clip, but i'm having trouble getting it back on.. it's almost like a snap-ring, but doesn't have holes.. and the edges of the "C" are cut inwards, thus making it difficult to hold open.. is there a tool for these particular clips, or do ya'll have any tips on putting this back on? i've been wrestling with it for a couple hours, and just gettin' frustrated.. any help would be much obliged..thanks!

Definitely, it looks like a pair of pliers with the grip surface turned outward. Works backwards too, squeeze to open. Available at about any auto parts store. Somebody stole mine but left my high dollar Craftsman adjustable torque wrench. Go figure.
