Need help with power top mechanism

I'm thinking about making a power soft top for my CJ and was looking for input on how to design this and what type of donor vehicles would be good for parts. Also, I'm putting a hot water "kit" on and was wondering if it would be possible to use it for making coffee and expresso.

Re: Need help with power top mechanism

i thought about doing a power roof once too, but then i realized that it wasnt really worth it since you have to manually unzip the rear windows anyways......so all the motors would do would be raise and lower the top part, which takes all of 10 seconds anyways, all the rest of the stuff still needs to be done by hand.

if you still want to go through with it, i would use a worm gear mechanism used in a lot of cars....i know Honda used them for thier flip up head lights....i saw them on my girlfriends car when i was fixing it..,... just grab motors, measure, make brackets and go!!!!

And I though I had crazy ideas!! Anything is possible. Obviously you are going to need a small motor. You'll also want some limiting switches so when the top gets to its limits the motor will shut off on its own. You will probly have to fab most of the parts yourself, but go to a junkyard and take a look at how other convertibles work. Good luck with that.

Re: Need help with power top mechanism

I like the Idea of being able to make coffee with a Jeep. That really would be a cool design... A truly great Idea.
You would have to try to use very clean water, then all you really need to do is to drip very hot water through a filter with grounds. I would think that if you have a hot water kit on your jeep, you could get a small water to water heat exchanger, and used that to heat the coffee water.
Being able to boil water with your jeep would come in handy a lot of times.

This is a great Idea !! I hope some other people have some good Ideas, this may be a project I would like to take on also.

Re: Need help with power top mechanism

Gave up coffee many years ago. I have seen a Toyota that had a small oven/stove under the hood. It was basically a box built above the exhaust manifold that you could put food into and warm or cook it. Yum exhuast smoked chicken.

Re: Need help with power top mechanism

I was looking at 4 wheel drive and sport utility last night and in the new products section, they had a new top that folded back like most other convertable tops. Just unhook it from the windshield and fold it back. It would be easy to hook a cylinder up to it to make it a power folding top.
