help - carb too tall on flatfender

I've got a 49 CJ3A that has been reworked by the previous owner. It has what I believe is an F head engine with a carter YF carb. My problem is that the hood hits the carb before the hood is fully closed (and this is without an air cleaner). I really don't want to cut a hole in the hood cause I want to maintain the stock appearance as much as possible. Any suggestions? I'd like to keep the 4 cyl in this one, but the other will be getting a Buick 231 asap. Thanks

one option would be to get a fiberglass or another metal hood and make the mods to get it to fit then keep the original.

One of the most disheartening things I ever saw was an early flattie with a torch-cut hole in the hood for the carb to stick out. It was on a ranch and being abused. It was for sale cheap, but that was in my non-jeepchick wife days. Gotum' new wife...gotum' many Jeep now.

Take a look at www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/hood.html. This page at the CJ-3B site indicates that the F-head and carb can be modified to fit under the original, low flat hood.

Not big on details but should give you some ideas on how to avoid cutting the classic sheet metal.

Good Luck.

I think I remember reading something about a carb from an early '60s Ford Falcon....

Try Archer Brothers. (510) 537-9587 www.archerbrothers.com. You could get a Solex carb for about 120.00. They are much better than the original Carter YF. J.C. Whitney also sells them.
